Asian Athletes and the World Athletics Awards

Asian athletes have achieved considerable success at Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships. However, representation in the principal annual World Athlete of the Year categories has historically been limited.

Qatar’s high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim won the World Athlete of the Year award in 2017. He also shared the Olympic gold medal in the men’s high jump at Tokyo 2020 with Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi. Barshim received the Inspiration Award at the 2021 World Athletics Awards.

China’s hammer thrower Zhang Jiale won the Female Rising Star award at the 2025 World Athletics Awards. Saudi Arabian 400-metre runner Hamdan Al-Bishi won the Male Rising Star award in 2000, while Japanese sprinter Abdul Hakim Sani Brown received the Male Rising Star honour in 2015.

India’s Olympic and world javelin champion Neeraj Chopra was nominated for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year award in 2023, becoming the first Indian athlete to receive a nomination in that category.

Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George also received the World Athletics Woman of the Year award in 2021 in recognition of her contribution to the development of athletics in India, including her work to encourage young people and girls to participate in the sport.

George won a bronze medal in the women’s long jump at the 2003 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships.

Rumesh’s nomination now adds a new chapter to South Asian athletics history. His achievement places Sri Lanka among the nations represented in one of the sport’s most prestigious annual individual awards.

A Milestone for Sri Lankan Athletics

Rumesh Tharanga’s nomination is more than individual recognition. It reflects Sri Lanka’s growing presence in international athletics and demonstrates the potential of local athletes to compete at the highest level.

With a national record of 92.62 metres, victories at major international competitions and the distinction of being the first Sri Lankan nominated for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year award, Rumesh has already secured a special place in the country’s sporting history.

The final result will be announced at the World Athletics Awards in Monaco on November 29, 2026.

Regardless of the final outcome, his nomination is a landmark achievement for Sri Lanka and a source of pride for the country’s athletics community.
