The National System Operator (NSO) has launched an internal investigation into the nationwide power outage on October 17 to establish the exact cause and sequence of events that led to the collapse of Sri Lanka’s electricity system.
According to the NSO, the system failure occurred following the sudden disconnection of a power plant unit, prompting a detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant remains temporarily disconnected from the national grid as a precautionary safety measure, resulting in a loss of 810 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation capacity.
However, increased hydropower generation due to favourable rainfall conditions, coupled with a relatively lower level of electricity demand, is expected to help manage the country’s power supply despite the reduction in generation capacity.
The NSO has assured the public that electricity supplies will be carefully managed over the coming days to minimise disruptions to consumers.
Sri Lanka experienced a nationwide power outage on October 17 following instability in the national electricity system. Restoration operations were subsequently carried out by the NSO, with affected areas gradually reconnected to the national grid.
