The postal trade union has announced that approximately 1.2 million letters and parcels are currently stuck at the Central Post Exchange and various post offices due to an ongoing strike by postal workers.

Chinthaka Bandara, co-convener of the United Postal Trade Union, reported that around 700,000 domestic and international postal items are specifically held up at the central postal exchange.

The strike, which commenced on Monday, July 8, was initiated by postal trade unions demanding the filling of 7,000 vacancies across various ranks, the regularization of casual and substitute staff, and the provision of promotions.

Following discussions held yesterday afternoon with the Prime Minister’s Additional Secretary, an agreement was reached to conclude the 48-hour symbolic strike.
