In Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, a catastrophic landslide caused by intense rains left three family members dead and two wounded, according to authorities’ report on Thursday. The tragedy happened late on Tuesday in Gamagori, after exceptionally heavy rains as Typhoon Shanshan approached Japan’s major islands. The house was a two-story wooden structure.

A 70-year-old couple and their three adult children—a son in his 30s and two daughters in their 40s—were among the victims. One of the girls sustained critical injuries while the other was saved from the wreckage. The family members’ names remain undisclosed.

According to local officials, emergency services were notified about the landslide around 10:11 p.m. on Tuesday; however, the precise timing of the catastrophe is still unknown. The city had intense rains from Monday night to Tuesday night, surpassing the monthly average for August in a single day, according to the Nagoya meteorological observatory.
