New guidelines have been issued by the Election Commission to help voters who are physically or visually impaired during elections. These regulations allow such voters to have a voting station attendant assist them in marking their ballot.
Key requirements for the accompanying assistant include:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Cannot be a candidate in the election.
- Must not serve as an authorized representative, regional representative, or polling station representative for any candidate in the election.
Voters must provide a fitness certificate in accordance with the Fifth Schedule of the Act on the Election of the President in order to guarantee a seamless support procedure. The steps listed below can be used to earn this certificate:
- Obtain the application form from the district election office, village officer’s office, or download it from https://elections.gov.lk/.
2.Complete the form and submit it to the village officer for certification.
3. Present the form to a government medical officer for further certification.
The voter and their helper must show a valid form of identification, such as a national identity card, at the voting place on election day.
