Today (17) witnessed the inauguration of the Western Automobile Assembly Private Limited (WAA) facility in Kuliapitiya by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, establishing a new standard for the automotive sector in Sri Lanka. The largest auto assembly plant in South Asia, the state-of-the-art building reflects a $27 million investment.

By the end of this month, the facility will have produced its first assembled vehicle—a 15-seater passenger van—signaling a major milestone in the development of local auto manufacturing.

The facility, which is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery created by international automotive specialists, is anticipated to create a large number of direct and indirect job possibilities, particularly for the young of the country.

The factory has an international-level vocational training center as part of its efforts to better align with industry standards across the globe. Through this program, young people in the area will get specific skills and have access to prospects for employment elsewhere.
