The Police Commission has directed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct a thorough investigation into a recent incident where a police team released a suspect’s confession to the media. Deputy Inspector General of Police for Western Province South, Gayanga Marapana, brought the suspect, linked to the Club Wasantha and Nayana Wasala murder case in Athurugiriya, before the media in restraints, prompting widespread criticism.
The Commission has expressed strong disapproval of the actions of the police team, particularly highlighting violations of established circulars prohibiting such disclosures of suspects. They have mandated a comprehensive investigation within two weeks to identify and report on the responsible officers.
In related developments, Kaduwela Magistrate Chanima Wijebandara has intervened regarding police conduct, rejecting requests to detain suspects and ordering police to take statements at the jail under special security measures due to concerns over the safety of the suspects.
