In a notable shift in the cricketing world, Jay Shah, who recently made history as the youngest ever ICC president, is expected to step down from his roles as BCCI secretary and president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). As Shah transitions into his new ICC role, the ACC is preparing for a leadership change.

According to news agency PTI, Mohsin Naqvi, the current chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is the leading candidate to succeed Shah as ACC President. The shift is expected to be formalized during the ACC’s October-November conference, with Naqvi beginning his two-year tenure in 2025.

According to a source, when the ACC meets later this year, Naqvi will be confirmed as the new president for a two-year term. When Jay Shah steps down, the PCB chairman will take over.

Shah has been president of the ACC for four years, having extended his term beyond the normal three years. As conversations over his succession at the BCCI continue, former lawmaker Arun Jaitley’s son, Rohan Jaitley, is emerging as a strong contender.

In his projected role as ACC president, Naqvi will manage the Asia Cup 2025, which will be held in India. His dual job as PCB chief and incoming ACC president would also put him at the forefront of the Champions Trophy 2025, which is set to be contested in Pakistan. Naqvi will play an important role in determining the ACC’s future path, including ensuring the Asia Cup runs smoothly and building consensus among member states.

Since taking over the PCB from Ramiz Raja in 2024, Naqvi has also been Pakistan’s Interior Minister. His new position in the ACC will provide an opportunity to rekindle cricket relations between India and Pakistan, with a focus on promoting international competitions involving both countries.
