On the first day of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and England, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) honored former captain Mahela Jayawardene by having him ring the traditional five-minute bell at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Jayawardene, a well-known player in Sri Lankan cricket, is the only person to have scored two hundred in Test matches at Lord’s. His first came on his debut at the “Home of Cricket” in 2002. He then scored 61 in the opening innings of the match in 2006 while captaining the team, his second century.
In 2014, he made his final appearance at Lord’s and scored a crucial half-century to assist Sri Lanka win their first-ever Test series in England. During his tenure at Lord’s, Jayawardene achieved an outstanding average of 64.
Just behind Kumar Sangakkara’s 12,400 runs, Jayawardene is the second-highest run scorer in the country with 149 Test appearances, a Sri Lankan record, and 11,814 Test runs.
There have been rumors recently that Jayawardene may be the next England coach. With Southern Brave in England’s local cricket league “The Hundred,” he has previously demonstrated his coaching prowess.
