The Teacher-Principal Union Alliance has declared a two-week trade union action beginning on July 22. This decision comes in response to the government’s failure to address the issues affecting teachers, principals, and parents.
Joseph Stalin, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Association, announced that during this period, extracurricular activities will be suspended after school hours, on weekends, and holidays. Additionally, teachers and principals will cease conducting duties through WhatsApp groups.
Stalin emphasized that teachers and principals perform numerous duties outside of regular school hours and on weekends. The planned action aims to address these concerns by pausing extracurricular responsibilities from July 22.
Following this initial phase, further actions are planned. These include addressing the two-thirds salary disparity among teachers, reducing the cost of school supplies, properly allocating funds for school maintenance, and ending the practice of collecting money from parents for school upkeep.
The Union of Teachers and Principals is committed to taking these steps to resolve the ongoing issues in the education sector.
