State Minister for Transport, Mr. Lasantha Alagiyawanna, announced that a new gazette outlining speed limit regulations will be issued shortly. The Road Accident Reduction Gazette is expected to be released within the next two weeks, according to the Minister, who made this statement during a press conference at the Presidential Media Center on the 11th.
Minister Alagiyawanna revealed alarming statistics, noting that 2,214 road accidents were reported in 2023, resulting in 2,321 deaths. For the current year, up to June 30th, there have been 1,103 road accidents and 1,154 fatalities.
In response to this critical situation, the Ministry of Transport has initiated several programs aimed at reducing road accidents. One significant measure includes the allocation of 50 million LKR by the National Road Safety Council to the Sri Lanka Police for the procurement of speed control equipment.
