Matara, Sri Lanka – The Matara Provincial High Court has handed down a verdict against three individuals, including the former Station Commander of the Tissamaharama Police, in connection with the brutal assault and arrest of four individuals, one of whom was a former student of University of Sri Jayawardenepura .
High Court Judge Chamara Tennakoon sentenced the former Police Station Officer, Pubhath Deshbandu, to seven years of hard labor. Although five charges were brought against Deshbandu, he was found guilty of only one.
The case, which dates back to 2008, also implicated Sub Inspector Sannasgala and Sergeant Kulatunga. Both were found guilty on all five charges leveled against them.
The sentencing marks a significant development in the long-pending case, highlighting issues of police brutality and accountability within the force.
