At a press conference held on July 24 at the Ministry of Mass Media, Department of Motor Traffic Commissioner General Anuruddha Weerasinghe announced that all holders of temporary driving licenses will receive their permanent licenses by September or October.

Mr. Weerasinghe explained that the economic difficulties in 2020 caused a shortage of the necessary materials for printing permanent driving licenses. As a result, nearly 800,000 individuals were issued temporary licenses. He assured that the required materials have now been imported, and the department is prepared to print 900,000 to 1 million licenses annually to meet the demand for new licenses and renewals.
