Under the guidance of the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Mr. Harin Fernando, the Sports Development Department awarded financial sponsorship checks of 10 lakh rupees and 60 lakh rupees each to the six sportspersons participating in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Apart from this, prize money checks totaling Rs. 1280 lakh were also awarded to athletes and coaches who won medals and top eight positions in the last Asian Games and Paralympic Games held in Hangzhou, China.
The rugby players of Badulla Haddaththawa National School were also presented with the necessary sports equipment sets. The players of the school rugby team came to Colombo as per the minister’s invitation.
Minister Harin Fernando said that this step was taken to encourage the players even in the serious financial crisis environment of the country. He wished strength and courage to all the players to bring pride to the country.
Mr. Harin Fernando said that he will take every possible action for the promotion of sports and emphasized that discipline is extremely important in representing the country.
He mentioned that at this moment, the people of the country are hoping for a victory and asked all the athletes to dedicate themselves to the expectations of the people of the country.
