Teacher and principal unions across the nation have declared a countrywide strike today by reporting sick leave. This action comes in response to the police’s use of tear gas and water cannons during a recent protest held in Colombo.
Yesterday, June 26, teachers and principals participated in a joint professional strike, resulting in the suspension of academic activities in many schools across the island. Student attendance was notably low, with some students turned away upon arrival due to the absence of staff.
Despite the disruptions, the Ministry of Education has announced that all government schools will operate as usual today.
In a related development, Examination Commissioner Amith Jayasundara stated that the evaluation of the second phase of the General Certificate of Education examination, scheduled to commence today, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. The evaluation will now begin tomorrow, June 28.
Additionally, the All-Island Grama Niladhari Officers’ Association has declared a nationwide strike for today (27th) and tomorrow (28th). The association’s chairman, Mr. Nandana Ranasinghe, affirmed that trade union actions will continue until their issues are addressed.
Furthermore, officers of the Registrar General’s Department have also decided to strike today (27th) and tomorrow (28th). Mr. Saman Jayawardena, President of the Association of Registrar Service Officers, announced that land registrars and additional registrars will participate in this island-wide strike.
However, President’s Association Director General Saman Ratnapriya emphasized the importance of acting responsibly for the country during this critical time.
