Election officials have stepped in to put a halt to a banquet that was supposed to take place at a well-known Nuwara Eliya tourist hotel and was allegedly organized by a district minister. The minister, who is supporting a prominent candidate in the upcoming presidential race, arranged a meeting that led to the scheduling of the event.
In response to a complaint, the Nuwara Eliya Assistant Election Commissioner showed up at the location with other officials and gave the go-ahead for the banquet’s cancellation. Because of the selective invitee list and the event’s scheduling in relation to the current election campaign, the officials raised concerns about possible election law violations.
In order to ensure fairness and avoid undue influence, the Election Commissioner’s office stressed that all activities throughout the election period must comply with legislation.
