The National People’s Party (NPP) has firmly denied claims that the recent uprising that allegedly resulted in the closure of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura was provoked by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a significant partner of the NPP.

At a press conference, former MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa asserted that the incident is wholly unrelated to the JVP or its supporters and that some factions are unfairly accusing the National People’s Army of being responsible.

Opposition parties are allegedly purposefully misrepresenting the facts, according to Jayatissa, who also implied that these claims are a sign of anxiety ahead of the 2018 presidential election.

Sajith Premadasa, the head of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), had earlier chastised the JVP over the event, accusing them of causing turmoil and cautioning against giving them state authority.
