Starting on September 1, 2024, the UAE government has announced a two-month amnesty program that will let people change their visa status or travel back to their home countries without having to pay fines or risk being barred from entering the country. The amnesty program extends to persons who were born in the United Arab Emirates without formal paperwork; however, it does not extend to those who entered the country unlawfully, have a history of deportation, or have fled their employers after September 1, 2024.

In addition to its regular hours, the Sri Lankan Consulate General in Dubai is providing special consular services from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, to support this endeavor. Extended assistance is also available from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is recommended that Sri Lankans make use of this chance to either return home or establish permanent status.

If they decide to leave the UAE, they need to obtain an exit permit, which is only good for 14 days after it is issued. Fines and limitations will be reinstated if you leave during this time. Citizens of Sri Lanka can visit the Consulate General or get in touch with them at [email protected] or +971 4 611 55 00 for assistance.
