A. J. M. Muzammil’s departure has left a vacancy in the position of Governor of Uva Province, which has been filled by Anura Vidanagamage. With a wealth of experience in provincial governance, Vidanagamage was previously a member of the Uva Provincial Council and held several ministerial positions, including those of Indigenous Medicine and Probationary and Child Protection, Women’s Affairs, and Social Welfare.
In order to back Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition and the SJB presidential candidate, in the upcoming presidential election, A.J.M. Muzammil, the former governor of Uva Province, resigned on Thursday, September 5. Muzammil stated in his resignation letter to the President that he would be leaving the governorship effective immediately.
Then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa first appointed Muzammil, a former MP and mayor of Colombo, as governor of the North-Western Province in November 2019. Later, in August 2020, he assumed the position of Governor of Uva Province.
