The Natural Hazards Early Warning Center has predicted that showery weather will intensify over the following few days, starting today (9th), throughout south-western Sri Lanka. The districts of Galle and Matara, as well as the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western Provinces, are likely to have significant rainfall over 75 mm.
The districts of Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara are also expected to get sporadic showers or thundershowers, and the Uva Province and certain areas of Ampara and Batticaloa may see some evening or nighttime rainfall.
In addition, severe winds with velocities of up to 50 km/h are predicted for the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Hambantota, Moneragala, and Trincomalee districts, as well as for the western slopes of the central highlands.
Extremely choppy waves and strong winds up to 65 km/h are expected from the coastlines of Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and Kankesanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar. These sea conditions will also be dangerous. There will be strong winds up to 55 km/h in the sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai and from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Because of the increased risks, the authorities have recommended the fishing and naval communities to proceed with caution when entering certain marine areas.
