The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has confirmed the death sentences for six defendants, including former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vass Gunawardena and his son, Ravindu Gunawardena. The court’s decision, rendered today (August 8), rejects the appeal petitions filed by the Gunawardenas and other defendants, who sought to overturn their convictions.
The defendants were originally sentenced to death in 2013 by a three-judge bench of the Colombo High Court for their involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Mohammed Shyam, a prominent businessman from Bambalapitiya.
