Presidential Election Crisis Looms Over Acting IGP Appointments

The President has informed the Speaker that he has received legal advice indicating that appointing an Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) every two weeks during the upcoming presidential election season could lead to election petitions. As a result, he has decided to refrain from intervening in these matters.

Despite avoiding the appointment of an Acting IGP until yesterday in accordance with a court order, the President officially communicated this position to the Speaker today. Critics argue that this move could jeopardize the re-election process.

Yesterday, Parliament announced that the appointment of an Acting IGP should be carried out constitutionally by the President, emphasizing that the Constituent Assembly, which can approve the President’s recommendation, does not have the authority to appoint an Acting IGP.

The Legislative Assembly is set to meet today to discuss this matter further.
