Former President Maithripala Sirisena underscored the imperative of holding the presidential election without delay, warning of potential unrest if any attempt is made to postpone it. Speaking at a recent event in Colombo, Sirisena emphasized that the election, mandated by the constitution, must proceed as scheduled to avoid serious consequences for the nation.
“The presidential election must be held. It can’t be postponed at all. Any suggestion otherwise could lead to widespread unrest,” Sirisena asserted to journalists.
Asserting his party’s readiness, Sirisena confirmed that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is prepared to field a candidate for the upcoming election. “The SLFP stands for principles and a vision that we cannot compromise. We will present a candidate who upholds these values,” he declared.
Sirisena concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the electoral process, stating, “We have always been elected thus far, and we will continue to uphold our party’s legacy.”
