In a recent development, the Cabinet of Sri Lanka has approved a bill to amend the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. This amendment aims to address and clarify the consistency between the tenure of the President and the Parliament as outlined in Articles 30(2), 62(2), and 83(b) of the Constitution.
The government has identified a need to ensure there are no discrepancies regarding the term limits of these key offices. To eliminate any potential ambiguities, the proposed amendment will modify Article 83(b) by changing the phrase “exceeding six year” to “exceeding five years.”
This amendment proposal has received the green light from the Council of Ministers, signaling a significant step towards constitutional clarity and consistency in Sri Lanka’s governance framework.
