Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, announced today that individuals who have obtained a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) need not worry about receiving letters or text messages from the Inland Revenue Department requesting tax payments, provided their monthly income does not exceed the stipulated limit One Lakh.
Highlighting the rapid growth in TIN registrations, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya revealed that the total number of registered TIN holders has reached 23 lakhs, with an impressive 13 lakh registrations occurring just in June.
“We aim to significantly expand our tax base,” stated the minister, expressing ambitions to increase the number of TIN holders to 73 lakhs by the end of July. He urged individuals to notify their nearest Inland Revenue Department regional office if they receive any unwarranted tax payment requests.
