In a recent media briefing at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headquarters, the party’s General Secretary, Sagara Kariyawasam, stated that President Ranil Wickramasinghe might be considered for the SLPP’s presidential candidacy if he leaves the United National Party (UNP) and joins their ranks.
Kariyawasam clarified that while the party has not yet decided on a specific candidate for the upcoming presidential election, they are committed to fielding a strong contender under the Pohottuwa banner.
“We did not present a particular case regarding the candidacy of the next presidential election. The right person is presented at the right time. Our party is fielding a candidate under the banner of Pohottuwa,” he said.
When questioned about the possibility of Wickramasinghe becoming the common candidate, Kariyawasam responded, “The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is presenting a candidate under the Pohottuwa symbol. He can also leave the United National Party and join Pohottuwa. If so, we will consider it.”
This statement indicates a potential shift in the political landscape as the SLPP remains open to including high-profile figures from other parties in their bid for the presidency.
