Tharushi Shines but Falls Short of Olympic Cutoff at National Athletics Championship

On the final day of the 102nd National Athletics Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Athletics Association, athletes faced challenges in meeting expectations.

In the women’s 800m final, Tharushi Karunaratne emerged victorious but fell short of the Paris Olympic cutoff, finishing with a time of 2:04.22. The Olympic qualifying time for this event is 1:59.30. Despite this, Tharushi and other athletes still have a chance to qualify for the Olympics at the final selection competition in Colombo on June 30th.

In the men’s 100m event, YCM of the Sri Lanka Army clinched first place with a time of 10.44 seconds. Additionally, N. Dhakshitha set a new Sri Lankan record in the women’s pole vault, clearing 3.72 meters and surpassing the previous record of 3.65 meters set by Sachini Perera in 2022.

In the men’s 200m event, Indusara Vidushan secured second place and set a new junior national record with a time of 21.14 seconds. A.S.M Safan of the Sri Lanka Army won the event with a time of 21.05 seconds.
