GMOA Threatens Action Over Suppression of Union Leaders

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has announced plans to escalate their professional actions in response to what they describe as attempts to suppress union leaders who expose the ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka’s health sector.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabhath Sugathadasa attacked the political establishment and health authorities in a news release for what he described as their narrow agendas, which are intended to subjugate and demoralize physicians. He emphasized that numerous stakeholders, both inside and outside the health system, are involved in the execution of these actions.

Under legislative restrictions permitting union officials to address the media, Dr. Sugathadasa stressed that the GMOA has traditionally strived to educate the public and pertinent stakeholders about issues and wrongdoing in the health sector.

According to the GMOA, union leaders who expose problems in the health sector face unfair and biased disciplinary measures that are intended to silence whistleblowers rather than combat fraud and corruption. The group issues a warning, saying that if these acts continue, they will eventually turn to more intense trade union activity.
