Official notice has been given by the Sri Lankan Election Commission that votes cast for Mr. Idroos Mohamed Illias, the deceased presidential candidate, will be deemed void. Illias was a contender in the next presidential election scheduled for September 21, 2024, but he passed dead on August 22.

Within three days of his passing, the Election Commission extended an offer to select a replacement candidate in accordance with the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 of 1981. Mr. K.M.N. Sanjaya Sampath Reman, his nominee, did not, however, provide a substitute. As a result, in compliance with election laws, Mr. Illias’ name will be struck from the ballot and any votes cast in his favor will be disregarded.
