NPP Hints at Potential Female Prime Minister in Future Government

The National People’s Power (NPP) has made vague references to the prospect of designating a female prime minister in its upcoming administration. During a meeting in Minuwangoda on September 21, NPP MP Vijitha Herath disclosed the party’s intentions, which include forming a new Cabinet under Article 47.3 of the Constitution, should they win. He stated that the parliament will be dissolved following the creation of the new Cabinet.

Herath responded to the opposition’s worries on the NPP’s capacity to lead in the event that Anura Kumara Dissanayake wins the presidency. He emphasized that Lakshman Nipunarachchi, who is ranked second on the Colombo District preference vote list, will take the oath of office as an MP following Dissanayake’s election. This will facilitate the appointment of a four-member Cabinet in the interim until legislative elections take place.

Herath further underlined how many competent professionals, like as physicians, engineers, and attorneys, are available within the NPP to serve in Parliament. Reiterating that numerous additional candidates of this type may make a substantial contribution, he gave the example of Harini Amarasuriya, who became well-known only after being elected as a Member of Parliament.

He added that, like Switzerland’s austere seven-member Cabinet, a provisional four-member Cabinet will serve effectively for two months until a larger Cabinet is chosen after legislative elections.
