Election Commission Targets Social Media Ads During Silent Period

After the formal presidential campaigning season ends, the Election Commission will implement a unique scheme designed to limit social media campaigns.

Ratnayake, the chairman of the Commission, stated that during the “silent period,” all types of publicity are prohibited in accordance with electoral legislation. He added, “Discussions have been held to enforce these regulations regarding online ads with major international social media companies.”

In spite of these initiatives, there have been rumors that some people are trying to get around the regulations by promoting presidential candidates on social media during the time that is prohibited.
