Ship arrivals for maintenance and layups at Hambantota International Port (HIP) increased by 53% in 2024. The port served 23 boats from January to August, up from 15 during the same period in 2023, underscoring its increasing stature as a major marine hub.

Two boats arrived at HIP in August for repairs, and the FPSO Svetah Venetia, the third, finished a seven-month layup. Colombo Dockyard and Dolphine Marine installed turret pipeline and blow thruster installations on the vessel. In the meantime, vents and stair treads were replaced by Harbour Serve Pvt. Ltd. while the M.V. Ram Commander was moored for temporary repairs.

The bulk carrier Archon Gabriel, the most recent arrival, arrived at HIP on August 26 in order for CIAP Limited to repair the steering gear. It left on September 3. The rise in vessel traffic is indicative of HIP’s expanding capabilities and strategic significance within the global maritime sector.
