The Supreme Court has set a hearing on March 4, 2025, to consider a plea that Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera submitted, which claims that she was harassed in public during the Galle Face Green “Gota Go Gama” rallies.

According to the petition, when police placed spiked barricades around the Presidential Palace, putting everyone inside in peril, they violated the public’s fundamental rights. Perera claimed that there were major threats to public safety from the barricades that were erected during the protests.

The petition was considered by a three-judge panel made up of Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Priyantha Fernando. The notices required the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), who were both mentioned as respondents, to appear in court on the appointed date.

The petitioner is claiming Rs. 50 million in compensation for people impacted by the incident, along with a declaration that the public’s fundamental rights were breached by the placing of barricades.
