A new draft law allowing people to choose between cremation and burial for their bodies after death has been approved by the Sri Lankan Cabinet. After being approved by the Attorney General, the proposed law will be sent to Parliament for approval after being published in the Government Gazette.
The Legal Draftsman’s draft bill also contains provisions for situations in which a deceased person’s wishes were not clearly stated. In these situations, the closest relative will have the authority to determine whether the body should be buried or burned while taking the deceased’s cultural, religious, and personal beliefs into consideration.
The plan, which tries to honor people’s cultural and religious customs and follow their last desires, was led by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms.
