According to media sources on Thursday, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the former Speaker of the Bangladesh Parliament, and Tipu Munshi, the former Commerce Minister, have been detained in connection with the death of a jeweler during recent protests over quota reform.

The Rapid Action Battalion captured Munshi, 74, late on Wednesday night in Gulshan, Dhaka. His detention is a component of the inquiry into the death of Muslim Uddin Milon, a 38-year-old goldsmith. The complaint, which was filed in Rangpur, lists 17 people as defendants, including Munshi and Chaudhury. There are other unidentified parties connected to the case as well.

From April 2013 until August 2024, Chaudhury, 46, held the position of the first female Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad. On July 19, Milon lost his life in Rangpur as a result of a student-led demonstration against a contentious government employment quota scheme. This movement developed into a broad revolution that culminated on August 5 with the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League administration.
