A petition questioning President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s ability to run in the next presidential election was denied by the Supreme Court. The petition was founded on claims that the President had neglected to fill open posts at the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal as well as to name an Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

A lawyer submitted the petition, which also asked the court to declare President Wickremesinghe ineligible to run for president and to force the President to name an Acting IGP. On the other hand, Attorney General’s representative Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle contended that the petition was fraudulent, in violation of Article 92 of the Constitution.

In addition to dismissing the petition, the court has ordered the petitioner to pay Rs. 50,000 in legal costs.
