The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has fractured into three factions, each supporting a different presidential candidate. Former President Maithripala Sirisena and his team have endorsed Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Minister Mahinda Amaraweera have pledged their support to President Ranil Wickramasinghe. Meanwhile, Dayasiri Jayasekara has aligned himself with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s candidate.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, the SLFP’s Vice-President, announced that the official candidate from the SLFP-led alliance will be revealed on July 31. He emphasized that his faction represents the authentic SLFP, countering claims from rival groups and affirming that the party headquarters remains under his group’s control.
