Sri Lanka Inaugurates Maritime Rescue Coordination Center with $6 Million Indian Grant

In a significant step towards enhancing maritime safety, Sri Lanka’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) was officially inaugurated today (20th), funded by a $6 million grant from India. The ceremony saw the participation of President Ranil Wickramasinghe and Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who together unveiled the digital plaque commemorating the event.

The MRCC features a main coordination center at the Colombo Naval Headquarters, a sub-center in Hambantota, and unmanned installations across Galle, Arugambay, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kallarawa, Peduru thuduwa, and Mollikulam.

Additionally, Minister Jaishankar unveiled a digital commemorative plaque for the opening of 106 houses in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Matale, constructed under the Indian Housing Project. The Presidential Media Unit announced the handover of 24 houses each in two model villages located in Colombo and Trincomalee.
