The increase in the use of narcotics has become a national hazard in Sri Lanka and it has been observed that many crimes are committed centered around the narcotic trade.
The political leadership has recognized that the menace should be eradicated first through an efficient decision-making mechanism and a national level program with broad public participation.
Accordingly, a program called the ‘Country Together – National Mission’ has been planned to be implemented to achieve the said objectives.
Under the program, it is expected to create awareness among society about this hazard through a wide publicity campaign, eliminate the network associated with narcotics trafficking, empower rehabilitation opportunities, and provide opportunities for those who wish to quit using drugs.
Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to the proposal submitted by the His Excellency the President to initiate the ‘Country Together – National Mission’ as an urgent and immediate national program and to establish a National Steering Committee.
