The SJB-led opposition parties are finalising drafts of complaints to be lodged with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Inter-Parliamentary Union against Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickremeratne.
Sources said that the complaints would cite a range of charges, including bias towards the government, acting contrary to the Constitution, disregarding Standing Orders of Parliament, preventing the Leader of the Opposition, the Chief Opposition Whip and other
Opposition MPs from expressing their views, rejecting the no-confidence motion brought against the State Minister of Defence, and obstructing justice for the Easter Sunday victims.
Opposition party leaders, on several occasions, had discussed what they called the Speaker’s bias against the Opposition, and later resolved to proceed with this decision, a senior member of the Opposition told The Island.
The written complaints were currently being finalised, and a group of Opposition MPs was expected to travel shortly to hand them over to the Secretaries-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in the United Kingdom and the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, the spokesperson further said.
