Hirana Police have arrested a 22-year-old monk for driving a car under the influence of alcohol and causing an accident where a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus was damaged.
The suspect monk, residing in the Panadura area, was arrested.
According to police, the young monk had been driving a car at night along the Hirana-Kindelpitiya road, accompanied by another individual, when the vehicle collided with a moving SLTB bus in Bulugahawella. The bus sustained damages as a result.
Following a tip-off from the public, Hirana Police took the suspect into custody.
A breathalyzer test was conducted to confirm that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. A senior police officer confirmed that the suspect had been intoxicated.
The police said legal action would be taken against him.
Further investigations are being carried out by Hirana Police OIC Samira Silva, along with Traffic OIC IP Saman Alwis and other officers.
