The Malaysian Indian Tour & Travel Association (MITTA) and the Sri Lankan High Commission in Kuala Lumpur held a fruitful discussion recently to discuss ways to improve Ramayana Trail tourism in Malaysia. Representing more than 200 Indian-Malaysian travel and tour companies, MITTA plays a key role in advancing inbound and outbound travel, especially for tourists who speak Tamil.
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner, Air Chief Marshal (Rtd.) Sumangala Dias, met with MITTA representatives to further the conversation that was started in July 2024 with the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KLSICCI). The summit highlighted the expanding potential for tourism between the two nations, given that over 60,000 people from Sri Lanka traveled to Malaysia last year and 10,000 from Malaysia visited Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner Dias emphasized the chance to showcase Sri Lanka as a desirable travel destination for Malaysian Indian tourists, who have historical ties to the country thanks to the epic of Ramayana. A film documentary about the Ramayana Trail was aired in support of this effort, showcasing historical places in Sri Lanka as well as Hindu deities connected to the epic.
In order to promote these tourism opportunities to Malaysian travel agents and outbound tourists, High Commissioner Dias asked MITTA for help. As a reply, MITTA President Dato’ Aruldas thanked the initiative and promised to share information with the Malaysian and Indian travel community.
In order to accomplish these objectives, the Sri Lankan High Commission is dedicated to improving commercial, investment, and tourism links between Malaysia and Sri Lanka and looks forward to fortifying its partnership with MITTA.
