Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Meets EU Chief Observer, Ensures Support for Upcoming Presidential Election Monitoring

Today, Ali Sabry, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, had a meeting with EU Election Observation Mission Chief Observer Nacho Sánchez Amor, who is also a member of the European Parliament. This afternoon, the meeting was held at the Foreign Ministry’s premises.

Minister Sabry underlined throughout the discussion that the Sri Lankan government is dedicated to supporting an open and impartial European Union Election Observation Mission for the duration of the election cycle. This guarantee demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining democratic procedures as the nation gets ready for the next presidential election.

The European Union has confirmed the deployment of an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to watch the presidential election set for September 21, 2024, in response to an invitation from the Election Commission of Sri Lanka.

The EU has a lengthy history of participating in Sri Lankan elections; it has sent out EOMs six times already, the most recent being in 2019. This continuous cooperation demonstrates the EU’s unwavering dedication to assisting Sri Lanka in its democratic transition.

Josep Borrell, the Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, chose Nacho Sánchez Amor as the Chief Observer.
