Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Executive Council Session Held in Astana

The 24th session of the Executive Council of the Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) took place yesterday, July 4th, in the capital of Kazakhstan. The meeting was chaired by the President of China, Xi Jinping.

During his address, President Xi Jinping highlighted the significant growth of the SCO over its 23-year history. The organization now includes 10 member countries and connects 26 countries across three continents. Xi Jinping emphasized that in a world facing various transformations and historical turning points, the SCO plays a crucial role in ensuring historical accuracy and fairness.

Xi Jinping stressed the importance of sustainable security and cooperation in countering threats from Cold War mentalities. He also underscored the need to protect development rights amid ongoing challenges posed by the United States, particularly in the science and technology sectors.

In a notable decision, it was announced that China will assume the presidency of the SCO for the 2024-2025 term. This marks China’s return to this leadership role after seven years.
