The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is being criticized by the United National Party (UNP) for what it considers to be cheap political tactics. The UNP also accuses the SJB of distributing false information regarding an alleged political agreement between Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the candidate for the National People’s Power (NPP), and independent candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Speaking at a press conference, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene claimed that the SJB’s actions demonstrated political desperation. Using recent accusations as evidence of political insolvency, he said that SJB’s leadership lacks the vision required to lead the nation during an economic recovery.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake was also criticized for giving voters contradictory assurances. Wijewardene claims that Dissanayake has promised one thing to people in rural areas and another to those in urban areas when it comes to his interactions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Wijewardene underlined during the discussion that the country currently cannot afford political instability or significant reforms. While some are calling for change, he argued that Sri Lanka actually needs economic stability more than an election that, should change be pursued, could take place in two years.

In addition, the UNP Deputy Leader offered commentary on the SJB’s lack of strong leadership, contending that even with a competent team, the party lacks a leader who possesses the skills required to lead both the group and the nation through this crucial time.
