Former Member of Parliament Pakiyaselvam Arianethran has been announced as the Tamil National Common candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The announcement was made at a special press conference held today (August 8) at the Selwa Art Gallery in Jaffna.

This decision follows a recent agreement between Tamil civil society and Tamil national political parties to present a unified candidate for the election. The Tamil People’s Alliance led by C.V. Vigneswaran, along with Telo, PLOT, EPRLF, Tamil National Green Movement, Tamil National Party, Democratic Militant Party, and various civil society organizations, have all endorsed Arianethran as their common candidate.

However, the Ilangei Tamil Arusukachchi party, part of the Tamil National Alliance, has yet to declare its stance on the presidential race. Meanwhile, the All Ceylon Tamil Congress is actively campaigning for a boycott of the election.
